Adventurers: 6th – 8th Grade


Camps run Monday-Friday 9-5 unless otherwise noted

Session 1: June 21-25 ~ Working with Wildlife Field Lab
Get a head start on exploring awesome wildlife careers! Practice wildlife field study techniques with KNC’s Research Biologists. Care for our exhibit and camp animals and meet live Birds of Prey. Meet with the biologists at the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery and look inside their release program. Stay overnight at the Toledo Zoo and learn what it takes to be a zoo keeper on a behind the scenes tour. Brace yourself – this week won’t be business as usual!
$275 Member, $300 Non-Member
Overnight campout is on Thursday night ● Tents and 3 meals are provided ● Tents are shared with same-gender campers only.

Session 2: June 28 - July 2 ~ River Trek and Backpack Adventure
Are you ready for the ultimate camp experience? Camp 4 nights and 5 days and really explore the KNC property. Study dune ecology, swim and camp at Saugatuck Dunes State Park and canoe on the Kalamazoo River. Learn plant and animal identification, tracking, camping skills, nature at night and more.
$375 Member, $400 Non-Member  
Overnight campouts are Monday-Thursday nights ● Tents and meals are provided ● Tents are shared with same-gender campers only.

Session 3: July 12-16 ~ Ancient Science: Adventure Day Camp
Grab your shovel and dig into the truth about the ancient history of life in Michigan. Travel to WMU’s Michigan Geological Repository for Research and Education and the Geosciences Museum at Rood Hall to explore the history that is hidden below Michigan’s soil. Meet life alligators and other dinosaur relatives. Don’t forget to go fishing, canoe the Kalamazoo River, visit the Delano Homestead or the Pioneer Cabin, search for fossils at the Gravel Pits and try your hand at archery.

Session 4: July 19-23 ~ Survival Sense: Adventure Skills Campout
Learn the survival and camping skills that it takes to have a real overnight adventure. Study primitive and modern outdoor survival techniques like shelter and fire building, archery, orienteering and GPS navigation. Gain canoeing skills on the Kalamazoo River and practice safety, knots and rock climbing etiquette at Climb Kalamazoo. Go wild with the wildlife and get ready for adventure!
$275 Member, $300 Non-Member

Session 5: July 26-30 ~ Entomology 101: Adventure Skills Campout
Survey and study insects in a prairie, pond, river and forest. Restore habitat for threatened butterflies by participating in the Imperiled Butterfly Conservation Initiative. Navigate the Kalamazoo River in search of aquatic insects and their predators and practice safety, knots and rock climbing etiquette at Climb Kalamazoo. After this week, Indiana Jones will have nothing on you!

Session 6: August 2-6 ~ Wild Adventures: Adventure Day Camp
Join in on the action as we search out superheroes of the animal world. Go behind the scenes at the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery. Study the animals that call the Kalamazoo River home on a cool canoe trip. Get up close and personal with KNC’s X-Men - the Birds of Prey. Visit the Binder Park Zoo and meet animals from around the world. Don’t forget to go fishing, visit the Delano Homestead or the Pioneer Cabin, search for fossils at the Gravel Pits or try your hand at archery.

Session 7: August 9-13 ~ River Trek and Backpack Adventure

Session 8: August 16-20 ~ Herpetology: Adventure Skills Campout
The study of amphibians and reptiles is more than it’s cracked up to be! Practice reptile and amphibian care with the KNC Exhibits Coordinator. Survey the habitat and search for the Massasauga Rattlesnake. Meet real life alligator wranglers – and alligators! Grab your paddle and head down the Kalamazoo River in search of spiny soft shell, painted and map turtles and practice safety, knots and rock climbing etiquette at Climb Kalamazoo.
